Million Pillowcase Challenge Blog Hop

It’s almost time  . . . the third annual One Million Pillowcase Challenge 24-Hour Sew-a-Thon begins at 3:00 P.M. on Friday, September 16th and runs through 3:00 P.M. on Saturday, September 17th  at the American Patchwork and Quilting headquarters in Des Moines, Iowa.

By now, you must be familiar with the Pillowcase Challenge. Since 2010, American Patchwork & Quilting has been challenging quilters, crafters, and sewers across the country to help reach the goal of donating 1 million pillowcases to local charities.  Since inception, more than 687,000 pillowcases have been recorded on the challenge website. Joining American Patchwork & Quilting magazine in support of the challenge are 2016 sponsors Baby Lock, Coats, Free Spirit Fabric, Handi Quilter, Martingale, Moda Fabrics, Northcott, Paintbrush Studio, Robert Kaufman and Timeless Treasures Fabrics.

I’m thrilled to be supporting the challenge this year. I’ve already made my first pillowcase using one of my favorite prints from my Revved Up Retro fabric line with a couple of coordinating prints from sponsor Moda Fabrics.

Here are the fabrics I started with:

That bubble print is one of my favorites. If you like it too, you can order some here or ask for it in your favorite quilt shop.

If you don’t live close enough to travel to the sew-a-thon at APQ headquarters, you can still make a pillowcase (or two, or ten) and donate them to the cause.

There’s a huge selection of patterns available here.

I chose the basic pattern and embellished it with an extra accent band  but you can add piecing or applique details or totally do your own thing. If you haven’t already, read through the basic pattern  . . . it has the clearest explanation of how to do French seams that I’ve ever seen. . . ah-mazing!

Pillowcases can be donated at participating shops or you can donate to the charity of your choice (a list of possibilities is here). Make sure to report your donation so you can help us move toward the goal of one million pillowcases!

Won’t you join me in brightening someone’s day with the gift of a pillowcase?
